The Gray ART 2 was produced from 1980 until 1984 by Leatherwood Industries/MAC. It featured a 3x-9x variable power scope, double point mount for the M-21 rifle, Sandstrom 9A finish. Many of the lessons learned from the Black ART 2 Transitional led to product improvements in the Gray ART 2.
This Gray ART 2 the last Gray ART 2 ever assembled and was shipped to Anniston Army Depot on July 20, 1984. Although it was the last assembled it is does not bear the highest serial number since serialization did not necessarily reflect the order of manufacture but was rather a function of QC certification order. This unit has survived in mint condition and it is doubtful that it has ever been mounted on a rifle.
The rights to the ART 2 design were eventually sold to DPMS in 1999. Production was short and plagued with quality control problems and ended in litigation in 2006. The DPMS scopes were serial numbered starting at 6800.
